About ICANZ

ICANZ:

» What We Do
» Adoption Programmes

ICANZ began in the late 1980s in response to the needs of children in overseas orphanages and the complexities of international adoptions. In 1989 concerned New Zealanders became aware of the desperate plight of children in Romanian orphanages, adopting over one hundred and fifty Romanian children in 1990 and 1991. Since 1992, ICANZ has helped hundreds of children from Russian orphanages find families in New Zealand. More recently we have gained permission to assist children in orphanages from other countries - Thailand (2005), Lithuania (2006) the Philippines and India (2007.)

We are a small organisation committed to providing personalised support to New Zealand families and their children from overseas orphanages.

We are a registered, not-for-profit organization overseen by a Board of Trustees that includes people with legal, accounting, social work, public relations and management skills, as well as personal experience with adoptions.

We are audited annually, operate on a minimal budget and ask for fees calculated only on a cost-recovery basis.

We are accredited by the New Zealand "Central Authority for Adoptions", which is the New Zealand Department of Child, Youth and Family (CYF), under the Adoption (Intercountry) Act 1997. ICANZ is monitored and approved by CYF.

We believe in and adhere to the principles of the Hague Convention on International Adoption which is an international agreement to which New Zealand has acceded. The Hague Convention establishes standards and procedures to protect children, birth parents and adoptive parents involved in international adoptions. More...

We adhere to the Standards of Practice of the Asia Pacific International Adoption Forum (APIAF).
