As adoptive parents you need to be well prepared for your adoption trip and the first weeks home with your new child. As adoptive parents ourselves, we're well aware of the huge impact of adoption on parents in the early weeks. ICANZ staff have travelled many times to the Philippines and Thailand, visited orphanages and spoken with many orphanage staff and officials so we can prepare you for the adoption trip and the weeks after you arrive home.
This seminar presentation is held by ICANZ to prepare you for the practical realities of the trip to your child’s country and the early weeks home with your child. It is required that both parents attend, preferably on the same workshop. ICANZ is committing to helping you adopt; we require to meet you in person and ensure you're well prepared before we can represent you in the overseas country.
You attend after you register with ICANZ and before you can accept a travel date. The seminar is held once a year, but this can vary each year.
This seminar covers the adoption process, special issues with adoption travel, what you need to take, what you need to know about culture for this trip, visas for your child to enter NZ, orphanages/foster care, child studies/medicals and how to read them, preparation for transition, naming your child, travelling home with a child, living with your child in a hotel, parenting newly adopted children, the first weeks home, post placement visits, finalising the adoption, citizenship for your child and much more. A workbook with detailed instructions on the process will be provided.
Date of Seminar: Friday 25 November 2016

Where: The Parenting Place, Greenlane, 300 Great South Road, Greenlane (750 along the road from the ICANZ office, near the Greenlane motorway off ramp).

$120 + GST = $138/couple
$80 + GST = $92/single attendee(includes workbook, coffee/tea, morning tea. Lunch and snacks can be bought at nearby cafes)
NB this seminar is NOT a general information evening for those considering adoption but a detailed day for those who are committed to adoption with ICANZ. There is a small cost to you, because the cost of ICANZ staff travelling to Thailand and the Philippines, gathering the vital information shared at this workshop, the written material provided, and cost of running this seminar (including morning tea!), must be spread across all first time adopting parents who benefit from this. If you're adopting a second time from Thailand or Philippines with ICANZ, you don't need to attend this seminar a second time unless there has been a significant time gap or the process has changed. However you are welcome to attend at no cost.
This seminar is separate from the CYF or AFS education seminars on general adoption issues. The focus is specifically Thai and Philippines adoption - the practical up-to-date details of the process for adoption and the early days home with your child. It's also an opportunity to meet other ICANZ families currently adopting to develop a support network and for ICANZ staff to meet you.
